3 Off-the-Beaten-Path Destinations in Tanzania
When you think of Tanzania, iconic places like the Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the Ngorongoro Crater probably come to mind. But did you know this breathtaking country has so much more to offer? Gerrit Jan and Ineke set off on an adventure with Jouw Afrika Reis and discovered a few hidden gems you won’t want to miss. They fully immersed themselves in the experience — thanks in no small part to their fantastic guide Mohammed, whose deep knowledge and warm presence made the journey even more unforgettable. Here, we’re excited to share three remarkable places where you’ll discover the authentic Tanzania, far away from the crowds.
1. Mkomazi National Park: Wildlife and Meaningful Conservation
Mkomazi National Park is a peaceful haven — untouched, wild, and free from mass tourism. Officially designated a national park in 2006, Mkomazi is a relatively young addition to Tanzania’s protected areas. Once heavily impacted by poaching, it is now a sanctuary for wildlife and a safe, serene destination for visitors.
Gerrit Jan and Ineke started their journey with a relaxing stay at Kilimanjaro Coffee Lodge. After a couple of restful nights, their safari began in Mkomazi — and it delivered immediately: within minutes, they spotted zebras, oryxes, and a herd of elephants peacefully crossing the road. Moments later, Ineke saw two lions drinking at a waterhole. It was a magical start to their trip.
They also visited the inspiring Rhino Sanctuary, where they came face to face with rare black rhinos — a moment they’ll never forget.
2. Usambara Mountains: Enchanted Rainforests and Hidden Stories
Next up: the Usambara Mountains, nestled in Tanzania’s northeast. This lush, fairytale-like region is a dream for nature lovers and hikers alike. With its pleasant climate, scenic trails, and sweeping views, it’s the perfect escape into the wild. The surrounding villages, full of color and character, are also well worth exploring.
Gerrit Jan and Ineke enjoyed a stunning hike through the rainforest, passing fruit trees, rare plants, and the occasional shy monkey. Along the way, their guide shared stories about medicinal herbs, colonial history, and life in the mountains. Mist drifted through the trees, adding a mystical touch — but as they reached the summit, the sun broke through. They enjoyed a scenic picnic at 1,842 meters, surrounded by nothing but green.
3. Lake Natron: Flamingos, Salt Flats, and Real Adventur
At the base of the dramatic Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano lies Lake Natron — a surreal, otherworldly place that’s unlike anywhere else. With its high salt content and glassy surface, it serves as an important breeding ground for thousands of flamingos.
Gerrit Jan and Ineke rose early for a guided walk along the lake, led by a local Maasai guide who shared insights into his culture and the unique environment of the lake.
After breakfast, the adventure ramped up with a hike to a nearby waterfall. Part of the journey involved wading through waist-deep water — an unusual but fun experience in hiking boots! Ineke took an unexpected dip, while Gerrit Jan swam under the falls, clothes and all. It was a day full of laughter, surprise, and even a few giraffe sightings to top it off.
