Africa Traveling

Uganda

From savannahs to tropical rainforest, mountains, Lake Victoria, the Nile and the desert: the diverse and adventurous Uganda is not nicknamed ‘the Pearl of Africa’ for nothing! Follow your own rhythm and be surprised by encounters with the warm and hospitable population.

Best time to travel

The best time to travel to Uganda is in the dry season, from December to March and from May to October. The roads are then easy to drive and many wild animals are easier to spot. The rainy season has the advantage that it is greener and less busy at that time.

Climate

Uganda is located around the equator. The temperatures are therefore about the same all year round, varying by region and altitude. In the lowlands it fluctuates between 20 and 30 degrees. In the mountains it is somewhat cooler.

Recommendations

Explore the north with an adventurous road trip. Here lies Karamoja, a rough diamond still unknown to tourists. Travel over dusty roads of red earth and discover the traditional Africa of the indigenous Karamojong, where time seems to stand still.

Known for

Uganda has an extremely diverse and beautiful nature, with a huge variety of animals. The mountain rainforests are home to many species of monkeys, including the majestic mountain gorillas and chimpanzees.

Special mountain gorillas and the most beautiful nature parks

Uganda is not yet as well known as Tanzania or Kenya, but at least as worthwhile. This country has the most varied landscapes in all of Africa, and an enormous amount of animals. You will find four members of the big five here – unfortunately only the rhinoceros no longer lives here. That loss is more than compensated for by the special mountain gorilla that lives in two places in Uganda, and that you can visit with a gorilla trek. Equally special is a trip to the unknown north, where the Kidepo Valley is located in the Karamoja region. In our opinion, the most beautiful and adventurous nature park in Uganda. Why

Uganda?

Birdwatching on Bird Safari

Are you a real bird lover? Go on a bird safari and discover the most colorful and exotic birds that the country of Uganda has to offer. In addition to cranes and shoebills, you will also find kingfishers, bee-eaters, hornbills and rollers.

Hike the Mosopisiek trail

Do you like to go off the beaten track? Far away from the modern world? Immerse yourself in the indigenous lifestyle of the Mosopisiek, in the higher parts of Kween District. During the hike, a local guide will tell you all about the old customs, such as making bamboo crafts with Mosopisiek women.

Whitewater Rafting on the Nile

One of the most spectacular activities in Uganda? Whitewater rafting on the Nile! This is one of the wildest places in the world to go rafting, so perfect for the real daredevils. Don’t worry, you will be guided by a very professional team.
“I have been travelling in Africa for years, and the safari organised by Tessa and her wonderful team was my best experience so far. The communication, both during the planning and during the trip, was excellent. Our route also included authentic, less touristy destinations that turned out to be much more impressive than the well-known hotspots. We will definitely book with Tessa again next year”

Expensive watch or local snack?

If you order a Rolex in Uganda, don’t expect an expensive watch. A Rolex is a popular snack made from egg, various vegetables and/or meat and is rolled in a wrap. Rolled eggs, or Rolex. Genius, right? Are you a fish lover? Then definitely visit Kampala and Entebbe, because here you can eat fresh tilapia almost everywhere. These cities are located near Lake Victoria, where tilapia is abundant. Do you prefer to be a bit more experimental? Then you are also in the right place in Uganda, because the Ugandans are crazy about fried grasshoppers! Especially in November, the grasshopper season, you will find stalls everywhere where you can buy fresh grasshoppers.

Our accommodations

Uganda has a diverse range of small-scale and sustainable accommodations, suitable for every budget. In general, the accommodations in Uganda are a bit more basic than in other African countries, but you always sleep in places that have a special story attached to them. Think of a glamping in the rainforest or a homestay with the local population.

Safari

Besides gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in the rainforests, you can also make great safaris in other nature reserves. Think of the wildlife-rich Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you can encounter elephants, buffalos, baboons and tree-climbing lions. You have the wild animals in Uganda all to yourself!

Gorillatrekking

The moment when you are stared at by a family of mountain gorillas (males can grow up to 1.85 meters!) after hours of walking through the jungle is simply unmatched. And it is a win-win: by booking a gorilla trek, you contribute to the preservation of the national parks and the protection of the gorilla families.

Sustainability and adventure combined

Sustainability is our standard. As a traveler, you don’t have to worry about that. We ensure that your dream trip is sustainable. Small-scale and local are our keywords. With community-owned accommodations and destinations off the beaten track, where we work directly with local partners. In this way, we ensure an authentic travel experience and at the same time contribute to the well-being of the local population. About the birds and the bees: the social projects of Your Africa Journey

Sustainability is more than a buzzword for Jouw Afrika Reis. Of course, our trips have an impact. We do everything we can to make it as positive as possible. For example, we support various social projects to improve the lives of the local population. Like Honeybee Heroes, a project that allows our travelers to adopt a beehive in the Western Cape of South Africa. Thanks to this project, a woman without an income now has a job that allows her to send her children to school, and at the same time we help nature.
