Ol Doinyo Lengai is unique in the world. It is the only volcano on Earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. This lava is relatively cool—just 500 to 600 degrees Celsius—and flows more quickly and fluidly than that of other volcanoes. The result is a surreal, moonlike landscape you won’t encounter anywhere else.
But the mountain is not only scientifically fascinating. For the Maasai and the Sonjo, it is sacred. They believe their god Engai resides within its crater. According to legend, Engai retreated here after being struck by a hunter’s arrow. To this day, the Maasai use the volcano for rituals and ceremonies.
